“Our backfield at Thames Road had white fences that went all around, basically our garden. It’s not even a big field, but it felt huge at the time. When we were kids, we played British Bulldog, and it felt like days to try and get back to your base. It was a part of Castle Eden Dene. We lived in the Dene; we were never out of it. I remember a photo of me, my friend, and my next-door neighbour, Susan, doing a wheelbarrow race. She lived in No.5. We were never inside; we used to do everything.” Maria Westmorland
